Valiyazheekkal bridge is being constructed across the estuary connecting Kayamkulam lake and Arabian Sea. The project is being contracted by the UralungalLabour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd. It is one of the 5 major projects under the District Flagship Infrastructure Project (DFIP) scheme The bridge will connect Alappuzha and Kollam districts, thereby enabling huge savings in travel time and cost. The bridge is conceptualized on a Tied Arch model, consists of 3 spans. The bridge has a length of 1229 meter including the approach road. An arch of the bridge is 110- meter-long and 12-meter-high and has a separate foot path for pedestrians to walk of 2.5- meter-wide on the either sides of the carriageway. Moreover, the bridge has facilities that ensures visitors to savour the mesmerizing visuals of Kerala backwaters and fascinating sunrises and sunsets. The physical model of the bridge is prepared by the students of Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction, Kollam under the guidance of department Head Dr. B Sunil Kumar, and Prof. Alan Sam. The model was prepared on a scale of 1:200 within a time constraint of 2 days. The students of IIIC took this as a golden opportunity to exhibit their skill in visualising this project for public understanding. The model will be on display at the 3 rd PWD Engineers Congress at Trivandrum later this month.
